AMH test indicates the functional status of the ovaries

AMH measurement indicates how many small, early follicles are present in the ovaries.

AMH measurement

AMH measurement shows the level of Anti-Muller hormone secreted from the granulosa cells of early follicles.

In women, the test is used to assess ovarian functional reserve, response to IVF treatment, premature ovarian failure, and menopause. Additionally, it is used in the diagnosis of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) (the value can be approximately double compared to age-adjusted level) and in investigating the etiology and treatment response of ovarian cancer.

In girls, AMH levels rise during late puberty. A woman’s AMH level is highest at ages 20–25, which is generally also the most fertile age. After menopause, AMH levels are almost immeasurable (below 0.03 µg/l).

AMH measurement can be considered if you are over 35 years old and planning to start a family. It is advisable to measure AMH level if you are over 30 years old and your mother’s menstruation ended early and menopause started early in her forties. The measurement is also recommended for 30-year-olds with endometriosis or if the ovaries have been treated surgically.

How can I access the AMH test?

You can order the test without a doctor’s referral through Puhti. You can identify the test by the abbreviation S -AMH. Sampling can be done at Mehiläinen laboratories across Finland. Doctor’s consultation is available as a separate additional service from Puhti’s result report. Mehiläinen and Felicitas doctors and nurses are happy to assist you with fertility-related questions.

Please read the instructions for preparing for the sampling carefully. The measurement is done at the beginning of the natural menstrual cycle. The test should not be done if using combined contraceptives. Biotin medication (5mg/day or more) should be paused 10 hours before sampling. The test should also not be done if breastfeeding.

AMH reference values (S -AMH) for women

Reference values depend on the age of the person being tested. Below are the reference values for AMH measurement for women.

Woman’s ageAMH [µg/l]
20–24 years1,2–11,7
25–29 years0,9–9,9
30–34 years0,6–8,1
35–39 years0,1–7,5
40–44 years0,03–5,5
45–50 yearsunder 2,7

Important to note in interpreting results

The result can be interpreted if biotin medication and combined contraceptives have been paused. During the use of combined contraceptives, serum AMH concentrations decrease by 10-30 percent, and prolonged dosing of the preparations over several cycles without breaks decreases AMH concentrations by up to half of normal. After discontinuation, concentrations return to normal. A control measurement should be done at least 4 weeks after stopping the use of contraceptives.
